Pregnancy is one of life’s great experiences. It brings a new dimension to a woman’s world, one potentially full of poise and grace. The practice of yoga during this time, whether for the first time or as a continuation of previous practice, can greatly enhance a woman’s sense of well-being and inner harmony.
Yoga postures (asana) and breathing techniques (pranayama) help to keep the mother-to-be’s body fit and mind at ease. They also relieve many unwanted discomforts such as back pain, swollen feet and emotional highs and lows. They help create room in the mother’s belly for the baby to kick and grow, and while Yoga itself cannot guaranteean easier birth, it does help the woman adjust mentally and physically to the demands of labor as well as motherhood itself.
Over the course of this weekend asana and pranayama appropriate for practice during pregnancy will be covered. How to progress in each trimester and how to help with common complaints of normal healthy pregnancies will be included.
Note: The focus of the Motherhood Workshop Series is on training teachers in general applications of Iyengar Yoga for pre and post natal women. Students with a minimum of 3 years Iyengar Yoga practice are also welcome.
Anna Delury is one of Southern California’s Senior Iyengar teachers and a founding member of IYILA. Since 1982 she has traveled regularly to India to study with the Iyengar family. In 1988 she received a BSc in Kinesiology from UCLA. Anna is deeply committed to fostering the growth and education of teachers within the Iyengar Yoga tradition, passing onto others what has so generously been given to her by the Iyengar family and her mentoring teachers.
